He woke up. He thought he could hear someone breathing in the next room, the near silent, smooth sound of air in and out. He touched the pillow next to him. But there was no one there. The room was too dark to let him see, but he felt movement, the shift of blanket and sheet. He whispered to himself, "Listen." He listened harder, he thought he could hear his wife’s breath, thick and heavy next to him, but there was no one there.
