The KDP morlocks did their job, and right now A Wisp of Smoke, Rising is live on Amazon.
A Wisp of Smoke, Rising is a horror story set in Japan in 1960.
It is also a spy story, a mystery of sorts.
It is also a homage to the media through which my generation discovered Japan.
And it has a historical twist, in more senses than one.
Wisp has a long story.
It is the first story I ever wrote in English, about 18 years ago.
It was submitted to a mailing list and variously corrected and edited by a number of friends. In a sense, this is the story that convinced me both to start writing again after many years of inactivity, and the story that gave me faith enough to try my hand at writing in English.
Then it laid dormant for five years, until I finally translated it in Italian. It was published in an anthology now long out of print.
Then, seven years after that, I revised the Italian edition, and self-published it as Un Fil di Fumo (from the Puccini aria in Butterfly).
Finally, last summer it was pointed out to me that the English readers did not have access to the text – weird, considering it had started as an English language story.
And now, as a Halloween special, I recovered the original English text, I revised, edited and expanded it, I added the notes to the text I had put together 17 years ago, and… and here it is.
I hope you’ll enjoy this one!
