My review of Have Bags, Will Travel by D.G. Kaye

Have Bags, Will Travel: Trips and Tales - Memoirs of an Over-Packer
This amusing memoir by D.G. Kaye is all about the difficulties faced by a shopaholic whose idea of travel centers largely around shopping and getting all her fantastic purchases home without paying excess baggage costs. I could relate to this book really well because I am both of the things the author is; I am a germ fanatic and I love to shop. My shopping also comprises of bulky objects because I collect antique and vintage dolls and books. Have you ever tried to pack three teddy bears, two porcelain dolls, gifts for everyone you know and about twenty vintage books into your return suitcase without it being overweight? I have so I can relate to D.G. Kaye's weakness for shoes and having to g...

My review of Annie's Story, Blessed with a Gift by Deborah A. Bowman

This was a fascinating account of a young girl’s life growing up in a Scottish clan  in Colonial Massachusetts between 1630 and 1648. Annie is born to parents who are dying of a disease. Through a stroke of good fortune, she is rescued from the house of death before it is torched to prevent the spread of the illness. Annie, who is also suffering from the disease, is delivered to her aged grandmother, the clan’s healer, who manages to save her from an early death. The illness, unfortunately, leaves Annie deformed and mentally slow but she is a delightful child who shows signs of a second sight and healing ability early on.The story delves into the lives of the people who are close to Annie, i...

My first rejection

Hi all,I was considering my journey so far and one thing popped into my head that I hadn't thought about in a long time, and that was my first ever rejection. If had known then what I know now perhaps my writing journey might have been very different. It was 1996 and I had just been discharged from the Royal Navy with a broken back. I decided to try and write a novel. I'd spent most of my life reading, especially at sea, and I had always wondered what it would feel like to see my name on the cover of a book. I never thought it would happen, after all I'd been a poor school student, and only clever and talented people could write a book, couldn't they?I picked a subject that I loved; I'd alway...

Spring's Eternal Song Cover Reveal

It's almost the first day of spring, and with that comes a new book release! I've been holding onto this one for a very long time and I'm so happy to finally be able to release this for you all to enjoy! Why did I hold onto it for so long? Timing, it's everything, right? I originally wrote this as a writing prompt for a publisher. When that didn't pan out, I set it to the side when my life got busy. Now, I've taken some time to make it what I wanted it to be (versus what the publisher had laid out for requirements). The idea for this story came from a real life event, but of course everything else is fictitious. I could go on and on about this book and how much I love Spring and Vince, but...

What Does March Mean in Virginia?

March in Virginia is when spring begins to return. We start seeing the greens and the blossoms. The greys and browns of winter begin to fade, and so does the cold. I love March in Virginia. And although you could not have convinced me this would be the case five years ago, since living in Virginia, I have come to love Virginia.

Why Dark Legacy Was Almost Never Published

I started writing the first book in my Dark Legacy series, Dark Legacy (formerly titled Inherited Darkness), toward the end of 1999. It was my first attempt at writing anything for quite a number of years. Back then, vampire movies and books were scarce, but on the rise with authors like Anne Rice and Laurell K Hamilton making their mark in the dark fantasy reader market. As my children were at an age where they were more self-sufficient, and I was still, at that time, a stay at home mom, I was able to devote many hours sitting humbly in front of my, then, typewriter and pounding away at the keys hoping to produce something that was, at least, half readable. My imagination ran wild, and in e...

The Storyteller

This quote describes the true storyteller perfectly. 'We do not write because we want to; we write because we have to' - Somerset Maugham. It's a compulsion. We live, breathe, sleep and eat storytelling with passion, inspiration, often times frustration, but in the end there is nothing else we can do. My dream was to become a published author and I have achieved that goal. Writing makes my heart soar. Ink runs through my veins and the voices of characters asking to be written about echo through my mind. I know in my heart of hearts that I will always write...because it's a part of who I am...I love it and, as Somerset Maugham so aptly phrased it, I have to.

Gerald Becomes A Wizard

Hi all, This short story is a prequel to the Gerald series of novels and is available free from Amazon. It is a 10,000 word story that shows the period just before Gerald and the amulet of Zonrach. I wrote this after finishing Gerald and the three princesses, which is now on submission with a publisher at the moment, because I missed being in Gerald's world and also because I want to give something free to my readers. Here is the cover blurb:"Life as a Royal Equine Poop Coordinator isn't the life for Gerald. His family business revolves around the rear end of horses and, as far as he is concerned, that is something he is not destined for. The life of a great wizard is on the horizon and Geral...
