Holiday Nut Mix ~ #recipes Homemade Gift idea #Christmas

I am not a crafty person.  I'm creative, in terms of dreaming up plot twists and developing characters, but the closest I usually get to designing gorgeous gifts or beautiful centerpieces is adding pictures I love with instructions I know I can't follow to my  Pinterest boards .  I'm in awe of people who have that kind of talent. But I *can* follow simple recipes, and a few years ago, my sister-in-law, who always hosts Christmas with a dazzling display of gourmet food and stunning displays, served a nut mix that I just couldn't get enough of.  And hey, it's nuts--a good for you food, packed with protein, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.  Even with the seasoning, it'...

Signing #Books in #Mashpee! Holiday Fair - Open House #CapeCod #Fitness Co.

As promised earlier in the week in my post on my local events , I'm doing a quick update on the Holiday Vendor Fair and Open House we're doing tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. the 9th, at the gym where I work (my day job, lol) - Fitness Company for Women on Rt. 130 in Mashpee.  While it's a women's gym, this event is open to ALL, men shopping for gifts, non-members, etc., so come on by if you're in the area! I'll have my book table set up, and I can sign and personalize copies of any of my novels--a great and thoughtful gift, for yourself (we all deserve to de-stress during the holidays, and what better way that shutting the outside world down, putting your feet up, and getting lost in a page-turnin...

Signing #Books in #Falmouth! Holiday Shopping, Bingo, Raffles #CapeCod Cape Cod

I have a couple of events coming up this week...Wednesday the 6th, I'll be in Falmouth, at a Bingo Night and Holiday Shopping Event .   This is always a good time!  The suggested donation is $20 (proceeds this month go to West Falmouth Preschool), and that gets you 20 games (wear red and green or something holiday-themed for a bonus card!). Complimentary light appetizers and a cash bar and buffet too! The entire room is lined with vendor and artist tables, and in December, the shopping will extend to other rooms as well! Where do I fit in to this event?  There are a whole bunch of local artists and vendors setting up for shopping before and in between the games, and we've all donated to the ...

A #Free #Book of "Hacks" for the Holidays! #Recipes #Christmas #Lifehacks

Every year, my publisher offers a free recipe book, as a gift to our readers, filled with contributions from the authors of The Wild Rose Press.  We vote on different themes each year, and we've offered Garden Gourmet collections featuring easy meals and snacks, international recipes, cookies and cocktails, and healthy recipes in the past...these books are still available, for free, on our website!  This year, we did something a little different...our "recipes" for Garden Gourmet 2017 are actually "hacks" - shortcuts or tricks to make tasks more simple, whether they involve cooking, cleaning, or just life in general. So grab you free ebook here: A Holiday of Hacks , and discover some new way...

Visiting #Newport #RI ~ #CliffWalk Mansions #Travel #RhodeIsland

My best friend and I have many adventures (or misadventures?) together, and this past weekend was no different.  Although we live 8 states apart, we manage to see each other several times a year.  We've been friends since freshman year of high school, and we've had countless crazy adventures together...seems there's always some sort of bizarre mishap when we're together, too (see the Zip Line fiasco ), and our mini-vacation in Newport was no exception. My friend used some airline miles to book a ticket into Providence, Rhode Island, and I used some of our Marriott points to get us an overnight stay at their Newport hotel right on the water.  Since it was a Thursday night, we asked for--and w...

My #Furbabies ~ #cats #dogs #rescue #pets

One of the authors who also writes for my publisher came up with a great idea for a blog series:  "Furbaby Friday" , a weekly post highlighting authors and their beloved furry writing buddies.  I'm reposting my story to share here on my own blog...and I'd love to hear about the pets that enrich your life! I come from a long line of animal lovers, and growing up, we never had less than three pets at a time.  Generally, in my adult home, that’s how many we still have, although we’ve occasionally had four.  I’m passionate about rescuing shelter animals, so I try to balance my desire to “save them all” versus the reality of the size of our house, but right now we have two cats and one dog, and e...

"Will Leave the Reader Breathless" #Book #Review ~ #Romance #Ghosts

I was thrilled to see a new review of my latest romance + ghost mystery, Haunted Souls, up at  Reader's Favorite Book Reviews  on Halloween!  Adding to the excitement, a few days later, I got an email from my publisher with the first 15 minutes of Haunted Souls being read by the narrator we chose...by December, the audio version of this steamy romance mixed with spooky suspense will be released on Audible! A damaged soldier, a secret baby, and a haunting mystery collide in Haunted Souls In the meantime, I'm working hard to finish my fifth manuscript, tentatively entitled Dangerous Currents.  I was hoping this month to use NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) as inspiration , but these da...

Drawing Inspiration from #NaNoWriMo ~ #amwriting past #writersblock #NaNoWriMo2017

Last year, I wrote about how I'd used NaNoWriMo , or National Novel Writing Month, to find the inspiration to get back into writing my fourth novel, Haunted Souls , which has since been contracted and released (and is going to be made into an audio book before the end of the year!).  I was again in a rut last November, in terms of finding the time and motivation to write, so I decided I'd try to use the momentum of NaNoWriMo again to at least get a good start on my fifth novel, tentatively titled Dangerous Currents.  This manuscript has been a real challenge for me, as it has no paranormal element, but I do like to grow as a writer in terms of doing different things, and of course, I have to...

The Origins of #Halloween ~ Happy Halloween #Halloween2017 #Samhain #amblogging

The month of October conjures up images of turning leaves, hayrides, pumpkins, scarecrows, black cats, and of course Halloween decorations.  I love learning about the origin of the holidays we celebrate, so I did a bit of (admittedly rudimentary) research to discover some of the reasons we dress up and try to scare each other on October 31st. Originally known as All Hallows’ Eve, Halloween is linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain.  This last day of autumn was considered the time of year when the barrier between the paranormal and physical worlds grew thin.  The Christian holiday of All Saints’ Day (All Hallows) also influenced Halloween.  It was said that the souls awaiting release on Nov...

History of Superstitions ~ #Paranormal Posts #Halloween

Some of my most popular posts have discussed the origins of certain superstitions--specifically, ones that are considered bad luck.  A superstition is a long-held belief or behavior with no rational basis.  As a fan of all things spooky, I like to research the history behind the more sinister superstitions we hold, especially around Halloween, the season that embraces the paranormal.  Of course, m any of these superstitions date back to ancient times, so tracing the exact sources can be tricky...and it doing the research, it definitely appears that often times, several factors seem to have combined to create the belief or behavior. I love (and rescue) black cats, so it's safe to say I don't ...

The Abandoned Glenn Dale TB Hospital ~ #Haunting #MD

Wide open door + stair case = hard to resist Glenn Dale TB Sanatorium and Isolation Hospital A few weeks ago, I wrote about my long weekend visit to Maryland and Virginia, the area in which I grew up.  It was a whirlwind trip, but one stop along the way deserves an entire post in honor of the Halloween season...our side trip to explore the abandoned--some say haunted--Glenn Dale Tuberculosis Sanatorium and Isolation Hospital, an enormous, 216-acre campus of 23 buildings located in Glenn Dale, Maryland. My sister works in a medical office building literally right down the street, so when I met her at work to begin our drive to a family wedding in Virginia, we decided to spend a few moments on...

Why We Fear the #13 ~ #Fridaythe13th #Friday13

How excited am I that a Friday the 13th is occurring in October, a month that already celebrates the paranormal?  After a long week, I'm gearing up for a Friday night scary movie watch-a-thon to commemorate the event, complete with popcorn and wine. I embraced the number 13 long ago, since it is the date of my birth, and there have been many years (including this one, in January) that my birthday fell on a Friday the 13th!  I do sometimes wonder if being born on the 13th has anything to do with my love of all things spooky, though.  All my novels incorporate some type of supernatural suspense, whether it's a mystery surrounding a haunting ( HAUNTED SOULS ,  GULL HARBOR , and  SILVER LAKE ) o...

#Book Signing + Bingo! #Falmouth #CapeCod Cape Cod Events

Silver Lake is a reunion romance... but Brandy's ghost has a message to share...a #1 Kindle Bestseller! As a fan of all things spooky, October is one of my favorite months...and, as usual, I have a lot going on this month, both writing-related and personal!  This past weekend had me traveling to Maryland (again) , this time for my 30th High School Reunion.  This is something I've planned every five years since graduation, not because I was an officer, but because someone needed to do it, and I think reconnecting with old friends is important.  There's a special bond between people who grew up together, in my opinion, and some of the people attending were in my kindergarten class.      Those ...

True #Ghost Story ~ #paranormal #haunting #StephenKing #SalemsLot

It's my favorite time of year, and I'm dedicating my blog this month to Halloween-related posts!  I am fascinated by all things spooky, and stories about actual hauntings are particularly eerie.    While I write about ghosts, I’ve never actually seen one, much to my dismay.  But our good friends have had quite a history with a ghost they've dubbed "Granny Griffin".    Granny Griffin happens to reside on the very farm Stephen King depicts in his novel ‘Salem’s Lot, although he changed the name in the book to Griffen farm.    The farm is located in the Maine town of Durham, where King grew up.    His best friend, Randy, lived on the 200-acre dairy farm, which dates back to the 1860s. This isn'...

Emotional Roller Coasters + #WritersBlock ~ #amwriting #writerslife

"Writers Write" -- until they don't, or can't, for some reason.  This is a re-post of the story I shared originally on fellow author Casi McLean's blog , as part of her "Authors Bare All" (ABA) series: There are a lot of posts and articles about various tricks and exercises which can be used to combat writer’s block, but this isn’t one of them.  It’s really more my personal story of fighting my way back to writing after walking away from it for a while. A lot of authors are very prolific, turning out several books a year, but I’m not one of them.  It usually takes me an average of a year’s time to write a full-length manuscript.  It takes a lot out of me, too, even though I do derive pleasur...
