G is for Garfield #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of comic strips. For those young ones out there, a comic strip is a few drawn panels telling a story which appears in the newspaper. The first daily comic strip began in 1907, but the color comics (Sunday funnies) actually began back in 1894.

If you are here looking for my typical Wednesday quote, I will go back to my regular schedule in May. Until then, enjoy the A to Z Challenge…

G is for Garfield – as if it could be anything else as my kids love Garfield. This strip by Jim Davis began in syndication in 1978 and appears in 2,580 newspapers. (Note that the strip started out with the title Jon when it was published locally in 1976 but changed when it became syndicated.) In 2015, the strip achieved the Guinness World Record as the “Most syndicated comic strip” when it appeared in some 2,100 journals in 80 countries. (In 2018, Garfield wrapped up a second Guinness World record title as the mascot received the most high fives in one minute when he received 194 high fives.)

The strip is about Garfield (the cat), Jon Arbuckle (his owner) and Odie (the dog). Garfield is lazy, hates Mondays, but loves food (especially lasagna). Garfield has been featured on several animated TV shows, three animated movies, and two full-length live action/CGI animated films. Garfield merchandise earns a billion dollars a year!
