G is for Gollum #AtoZChallenge
For the A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of antagonists.
On my normal blogging days, Monday – parenting and Thursday – writing/publishing, I will tie that day’s topic to antagonists but on the other days (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday), I will write about antagonists from movies, TVs or books. On Wednesdays, my Quote of the Week will be from an antagonist that matches the letter of the day. Enjoy.
G is for Gollum, the Hobbit corrupted by the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, The Hobbit (1937) and its sequel The Lord of the Rings (1954). While Gollum is not the main antagonist in The Lord of the Rings, his obsession with the ring has him plotting time and again against the current holder of the Ring, Frodo Baggins.
Gollum’s body and mind have been twisted due to his long association with the Ring. He no longer remember the time when he was known as Smeagol. All he knows is his desire for his “precious.” Truly, Gollum is often torn between his lust for the Ring and his desire to be free of it.
Though he has been portrayed in many films and on the stage, his most recent portrayal in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-2003) is probably the one most people know and remember.
