Getting personal with Terry West

Terry West is a brilliant writer. He takes you on a journey in his books that you didn’t expect to happen. I don’t think I have read one yet that I didn’t feel like I was right in the middle of the action. He is very smart and easy to talk to and I always enjoy our chats about his latest book. He is a dedicated family man and proud dad. He works for the website Halloween Forevermore and if you aren’t familiar make sure you check them out. I highly recommend you picking up two or twelve of Terry West’s books to read also. You can’t go wrong with any of them. If you don’t know him please drop him a friend request he is a wonderful man and friend. Please welcome Terry West to Roadie Notes…..

1. How old were you when you first wrote your first story?

Probably twelve.

2. How many books have you written?
I’ve lost count! I’ve written many writer-for-hire projects for the YA market. As far as adult horror, maybe one dozen.

3. Anything you won’t write about?
There isn’t a particular subject, other than the obvious taboos most avoid. There are many genres I have no interest in writing for.

4. Tell me about you. Age (if you don’t mind answering), married, kids, do you have another job etc…
I am 51. I am married with one kid. I work for the horror website, Halloween Forevermore. I’ve had day jobs in the past, but I don’t discuss them. I keep that part of my life separate from my presence as a writer. It keeps things less complicated.

5. What’s your favorite book you have written?
As of now, All of the Flesh Served. It is a dystopian thriller that will be released on May 5th. It imagines a dark future based on our current headlines and politics.

6. Who or what inspired you to write?
My grandmother was an avid reader. She was a wise lady and recognized that I had an artistic soul. She was my reason for picking up the pen but she hated the horror stuff. Still, she was very proud.

7. What do you like to do for fun?
I love to watch horror movies, new and old. I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I paint, sometimes. I collect old comics and horror merchandise. Far too much.

8. Any traditions you do when you finish a book?
Other than a happy dance, not really.

9. Where do you write? Quiet or music?
I have an offcie in a loft on the second story of my house. I listen to classical and soundtracks that fit the story I am writing. For All of the Flesh Served, I listen to the Escape from New York soundtrack quite often as I write.

10. Anything you would change about your writing?
The speed! I feel like I take forever!

11. What is your dream? Famous writer?
When you are in the writing business, you have to manage your expectations, or you will go mad. I have been in the spotlight a few times, but out of sight, out of mind. You come out with a decent selling title, maybe your other books get a bump, but things usually go dark until that next one comes out. I have been doing this a long time, and I am used to the rhythms. I have a decent following, and I am very grateful.

12. Where do you live?
Southern California.

13. Pets?
Three dogs.

14. What’s your favorite thing about writing?
The caffeine. But seriously, that feeling you get when the story falls into place. You’re building as you go, and sometimes you don’t know exactly how you will get to THE END. I have an exercise I use when I write. I ask myself questions, and I don’t stop revising until there are no more questions that I can ask myself about a story.

15. What is coming next for you?
All of the Flesh Served (May 5th) and the next Night Things book, out this fall!
