Groundbreaking: Cody Sullivan

Don’t you love when someone does something phenomenal, or groundbreaking? Sometimes they’re pioneers, because they’re the first to do it. Young Cody Sullivan is a pioneer because he is the first person with Down Syndrome to graduate from college? Imagine how proud he and his family must be. Cody has recently graduated from Concordia College in Oregon.  Here’s what Cody’s friend Matt said,

“It’s something that’s so normal for us. We see him every day. We don’t see him any different. So it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, he’s graduating; he’s done his four years here; he’s got his degree.”

Are you wondering how Cody did it? No doubt he worked very hard to reach is goal. ” Sullivan received a certificate of achievement in Elementary Education thanks to the West Coast Think College coalition program.

“So Cody would have his notes in class, that he’d taken before, that aligned to what we were working on, and then when we had a project, he’d be up there with a modified project that fit the requirements of what we were doing in class,” said Seth Phelps, another friend of Cody’s.”

What was Cody’s favorite subject? Here’s what he had to say about that;

“I took math and health, and all my classes,” Sullivan said. “I loved math.”

And if you’re wondering if Cody’s hard work paid off, it did. He’s already gotten a job at a local school as a teacher’s aide. Isn’t that wonderful news? I hope more students with disabilities learn about Cody’s experience and realize they can do groundbreaking things too. You never know what you can do until you try.
