Halloween Short Story – All…Fall…Down!
According to Wikipedia, Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a spooky celebration observed annually on October 31st – the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints’ Day.
It is believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, costume parties, carving pumpkins into Jack-o’-Lanterns, lighting bonfires, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror movies.
History lesson over – the telling scary stories part is the one that we’re interested in and the debut of my latest sacrifice at the altar of the writing gods, “All…Fall…Down!”
I’ve been sitting on this story idea for almost 12 months. A news item about a hit-and-run driver mowing down a group of families out trick or treating caught my eye last year and found its way into my ‘swipe’ files. The driver killed three people and injured many more. As I read about this tragedy, the more I wondered (What if?) what would happen if the perpetrator was targeted by the restless spirit of one of his victims? One idea led to another and this is the end result.
The story came together while taking a weekend break/mini writing retreat at Cape Cod with my wife. We had a great long weekend visiting numerous beaches and restaurants and I was able to achieve plenty of outlining and writing. Once underway, I found the flow from brain to fingertips and keyboard one of the best transitions yet in my writing endeavors. Maybe I’m doing something right!
Anyone who knows me or is a regular reader of my blog (thank you so much for the support), will know I listen to music when I write. The dominant playlist for this story was Rob Zombie’s “Past, Present, Future” CD.
So, dear reader, grab yourself a Boston Scream donut and a steaming mug of pumpkin coffee, settle back and enjoy “All…Fall…Down!” Then try to ignore the three knocks at your door…Trick or Treat?
Blade McGowan white-knuckled the steering wheel. He tried to remain calm as he drove out of the city toward the sanctuary of the hideout. Sweat formed on his brow soaking into his ski mask.
The stolen Mustang’s rear wheels slipped and spun, scrabbling for grip on the wet asphalt. The fat tires finally found some grip and the car accelerated onto the highway like a bullet from a gun, a 420-horsepower killing machine penetrating the night.
McGowan’s accomplice, Killian Sutter, sat in the passenger seat. He peered over his shoulder checking for cop cars through the rear windshield, his nervousness unmistakable.
