INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES from Owen Thomas Fiction: Washington, D.C. Edition -- Kramerbooks & Afterwards Cafe

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES: Washington, D.C. – Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café

How long has it been since you supported your local independent bookstore or library? I don’t care what your answer is. However long it has been is much too long. We all need to get out there and show some love for those lonely foot soldiers in the fight against illiteracy, literary apathy, and the threat of complete assimilation by the American zero-attention-span-unless-it’s-a-video-zombie-culture that is taking an ever-greater hold of our society. If you live in or intend to visit Washington, D.C., here is a good place to start…

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “Kramerbooks & Afterwords first opened its doors amid the Bicentennial celebrations of 1976. At the time of its opening it was the first bookstore/café in Washington DC. Over the years, through expansions, subpoenas, and innumerable neighborhood changes, much of our business has remained constant, notably our commitment to providing our patrons with access to the best books we can procure and to the most delicious, varied food we can produce. In addition to possessing a lively, convivial atmosphere, and a full-service bar, Kramerbooks & Afterwords stages hundreds of book-related events each year, both in the store and elsewhere. From tourists to neighbors, college students to the political elite, there is something for everyone at Kramerbooks & Afterwords!”
