Jealousy – Ignore the Bite

It’s so easy to be jealous of an indie author who is selling large quantities of their books on a daily basis. Most of us have to struggle to get a single sale in a month and yearn for the day when our name will be recognized by readers worldwide. Lately, there has been a trend to put down those successful authors, to claim they have sold out because they no longer have to struggle.
Stop falling for that immediately.
In order for an author to be successful in the twenty-first century world, we must work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in order to make our books known to potential readers. We have to be coming up with new promotional tools constantly. Authors need to be prepared to have their books reviewed poorly, and we have to do all of this with a smile on our face and a willingness to accept failure. Like any business, we have to realize there are times when we’ll have fabulous months were we sell many books, and poor to non-existent sales in other months. The latter will often happen more than the former.
We are all humans and therefore victims of that niggling feeling that we should be doing better than we are. We stare at authors proudly proclaiming they’ve sold more books, gotten more reviews, and are gushing about appearance offers arriving through their email. Many of us think, if only that was me.
Well, it can be you. What you, the author, have to realize is that other author selling their books so much has discovered what works for their fans. They aren’t stagnating in their promotion but rather updating it, creating new and more attractive images to attract attention, and getting out daily with upbeat postings about their books.
Take a lesson from these individuals. Don’t grumble and grouse about what you don’t have. Put on a happy face, take to social media, and talk about your books. But don’t talk about them exclusively. Get interested in what others are passionate about. Commiserate with those who have experienced failure and cheer with those who’ve had success. Be the author willing to do blog posts for your friends’ new releases. Become the author leading the pack by trying methods everyone else is afraid to attempt.
Remember one thing while you’re doing this. Pea-green jealously won’t sell your books. A happy, smiling face and positive attitude will do that.
About the K.C. Sprayberry
Born and raised in Southern California’s Los Angeles basin, K.C. Sprayberry spent years traveling the United States and Europe while in the Air Force before settling in northwest Georgia. A new empty nester with her husband of more than twenty years, she spends her days figuring out new ways to torment her characters and coming up with innovative tales from the South and beyond.
She’s a multi-genre author who comes up with ideas from the strangest sources. Those who know her best will tell you that nothing is safe or sacred when she is observing real life. In fact, she considers any situation she witnesses as fair game when plotting a new story.
