K is for Katy Perry #AtoZChallenge
For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of songs about magic. (Fitting for a fantasy author.) If you are here looking for my writing series, it will resume back in May.
K is for Katy Perry’s song “Dark Horse.” Perry wrote the song with Juicy J (Jordan Houston), Lukasz Gottwald, Sarah Hudson, Max Martin and Henry Walter. It was released as the third single from Perry’s fourth studio album, Prism, which came out in 2013.
“Dark Horse” reached number one on the charts in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. It reached the top 10 in 20 countries including the United Kingdom and the New Zealand. It was also nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.
In interviews, Perry said she wanted the song to have a “witchy, spell-y kind of black magic-y idea.” She wrote it from the prospective of a witch warning a man not to fall in love with her because if he does, she will be his last.
“So you wanna play with magic
Boy, you should know whatcha falling for
Baby do you dare to do this
‘Cause I’m coming atcha like a dark horse”
