Kid’s books: caring

Do you love kid’s books where the main character wants to make a difference to others? I do, and I tend to remember what happens in that story as well. What about nine-year-old Carl, who donated 3500 comic books to hospitalized military members. Carl loved comics so he decided they would help cheer up veterans, so he contacted The Veterans Affairs Administration about distributing the comic books. Of course, Carl didn’t have as many books as he needed so he asked his friends to contribute some of theirs.

When he made his first stop at a hospital to leave off the books, he was pleased at the reception.   Carl said“They felt really grateful for the donation because all of the books would go to veterans in the hospital who need something fun to read and something to cheer them up,” says Carl. “I was really happy that they were so excited about them.” But Carl also received a hero’s welcome.

Several high-ranking officers were waiting to give him a VIP tour of the base. Carl was allowed to try on military gear and explore the inside of a plane and helicopter. Then, the officers awarded him 3 different medals of excellence in recognition of his kindness.

Here’s what Carl said about the events that day:

“They all gathered around and Commander Lowery said that she had a medal for me. I was so surprised when she handed me her coin of excellence. It made me feel very special and excited. Everybody who was outside applauded for me. I was so surprised I could barely stand!”

“Jennifer Myers spoke with me to make sure I understood what these coins meant and that I would always treasure them. We all hugged goodbye and thanked her for setting up such a special day. I do not think I have ever felt as special and welcome as everybody at Joint Base MDL made me feel!”

Wouldn’t this story make one of the best kid’s books someday? Children would love reading about the generous thing Carl did to help soldiers. Isn’t he a wonderful role model? Wouldn’t it be amazing if other kids followed Carl’s example of kindness to others.

If you like kid’s books about helping others, you’re likely to enjoy Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog, amusing tales told by the cute animal characters.
