O is for Outland and Opus #AtoZChallenge

For this year’s A to Z Challenge, I have chosen the theme of comic strips. For those young ones out there, a comic strip is a few drawn panels telling a story which appears in the newspaper. The first daily comic strip began in 1907, but the color comics (Sunday funnies) actually began back in 1894.

O is for Outland and Opus by Berkeley Breathed. Outland is a follow up comic strip to Berkeley’s Bloom County strip that ran from 1980 to 1989 (and again in 2015 to present). Outland was a Sunday Spin-off of Bloom County and ran from 1989 to 1995. This strip featured a minor character – Ronald-Ann Smith – from the original strip. Other characters from Bloom County such as Opus the Penguin also appeared.

Opus starred in his own comic strip by the same name. It ran from 2003 to 2008 and was set in Bloom County. When Berkeley decided to end the strip, he originally announced he might kill off the main character, but later said he was joking. The character Opus has also shown up in the newer Bloom County comics that Berkeley posts on Facebook.
