Ten Days to Patreon
So, my Patreon page goes up in ten days flat.
I’ve spent some time discussing details with the Patreon tech assistance people – that are called Community Happiness Team, which sounds like something out of Huxley, or the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The sort of people that will beat you up with truncheons if you’re not visibly happy.
But despite their sinister – to me at least – job designation, the guys have been quite good at solving my problems, or pointing me in the right direction.
So, what will happen now?
First, I’ll be putting up a welcome message – and believe me, I’m trying to find the right balance between being informative and not being artificially cheerful.
I might even do a welcome video. Possibly.
Yes, I’m scared.
Then, starting on December the 1st, I’ll ask you for your money, and because nobody wants to throw money at a stranger just because, I’ll give something back to you.
I already mentioned rewards and stuff in a previous post, now let me get a little more in-depth.
For one buck a month, you’ll have access to my Patreon feed.
In exchange for one dollar, you’ll get exclusive posts (two per week) on my assorted interests, behind-the-scenes on my writing, previews of my stories, sneak peeks at unedited roughs, outlines, and the sort of stuff that litters a writer’s desk – lists of names, snippets of descriptions, photo references, character sketches … And you’ll get mentioned in all my ebooks, by name, unless you prefer otherwise.
For five bucks a month, you’ll get more: one short story per month, in the 3000/4000 words range, or maybe something longer in two parts. I’ll deliver the story as an ebook by the end of the month – so that patrons joining my page on December will get their story between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Sometimes I’ll do translations of stories I wrote in the past for the Italian market, but I’d really love to try and do a new original piece per month. I’ll be covering my established series, like Aculeo & Amunet and BUSCAFUSCO, but also do new stuff, and experiment more.
At this level, you’ll also get polls, to vote about genre and content of some of the stories, just to raise the bar a little for me – I like writing on demand.
And of course you’ll get to rummage through my drawers with the one buck crowd – you get all they get, plus the story.
For ten bucks a month you’ll get all of the above, plus online chats once a month using hangouts, to talk whatever you feel like, from writing to cooking, trade book suggestions, gossip about common acquaintances, and what else.
I’ll also offer access to my Storium games – about which, more in the future.
And talking about games, I’m also trying to find a way to offer gaming scenarios for those interested in them, but we’ll save that for later, together with the idea of resurrecting my podcast.
And this is it for the time being.
There will be specials, especially considering I’ve set up a number of stretch goals, but I’ve yet to attach a reward to each one of them.
And I’ll have to find a way to keep my Italian patrons happy – if any. I’ll translate the new stories, and do bilingual posts. But I’ll also do new Italian-language stories, and then translate those. And why not, we might set up two chats per month, one in Italian and one in English.
Apparently I’ll be the only bilingual writer on Patreon, and this caught the Community Happiness Team by surprise.
There’s no standard procedure to handle two languages, so we’ll have to wing it.
Not conforming to standard?
As usual, suggestions and ideas are welcome – I’m making this up as I go, and any kind of help will be appreciated.
