Shout Out
"It was 1973 as I entered the seventh grade at John J. Pershing Middle School, in San Diego, CA. I was among the first group of innercity children bused to predominately white schools. That initial year was the most difficult as we faced prejudice, fights, and other racial tensions. Adding to this, I was shown to have had a reading ability far below my grade level. What was easily the most challenging time in my life was also the most rewarding. My reading development teacher, Ms. Davila, gently worked with me to improve my reading skills. At the same time, she discovered I had a hidden talent: I could write. She not only allowed me learn my self-worth, but she also demonstrated through her kindness that not every white person was 'evil'. Some were wonderful teachers, too. I will be forever grateful she was brought into my life." ~ Lawrence D. Elliott
