When I graduated from USC in 1985, my dad asked me if I wanted a computer or ticket to London. Who needed a clunky old Macintosh? Once across the Atlantic, I purchased a manual green typewriter and spent the next two years tapping away at the window of a second story room I rented in central London.

Growing up in suburban Southern California during the 1970s infused me with numerous imaginative stories and ideas that ultimately planted the seeds for my first novel, "This Girl Climbs Trees". Originally, I wanted to develop a character as strong as Mick in "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers and as innocent and sassy as Scout in "To Kill a Mockingbird".

As a young girl, I loved to read. One summer, I earned an award for reading 100 books. I was ten. That’s not to say I spent every sunlit hour inside. Running around in a neighborhood filled with mostly boys encouraged me to tackle "boy stuff", like exploring vacant lots, dissecting worms, and climbing trees. And, yes, one of my neighbors built a tent in his backyard and proffered an invitation.
