Black Eagle Inn

Book Description

The Black Eagle Inn is an old established Restaurant and Farm business in the sleepy Bavarian countryside outside of Heimkirchen. Childless Anna Hinterberger has fought hard to make it her own and keep it running through WWII. Religion and rivalry divide her family as one of her nephews, Markus has got her heart and another nephew, Lukas got her ear. Her husband Herbert is still missing and for the wider family life in post-war Germany also has some unexpected challenges in store.
Once again Fischer tells a family saga with war in the far background and weaves the political and religious into the personal. Being the third in the Three Nations Trilogy this book offers another perspective on war, its impact on people and the themes of nations and identity.

Quite honestly, it's been a long time since I enjoyed a book as much as this one. Mr. Fischer masterfully weaves the story of what occurs in a family and in the Bavarian countryside, post-WWII. I learned more about that time and place through this book than I ever did taking history classes. This should be required reading for every professor who is or intends to teach in that area of history. Greed, social issues, religion, and politics fuel the story as it deftly unfolds the relationship between members of a family and their ties to the land and the Black Eagle Inn. The characters are so believable and the plot is so compelling that the reader can't help but be transported to that time and place. I cannot recommend it highly enough. My only regret is that I've already read it. I've now read all three books in The Three Nations Trilogy and each one is excellent. Thank you, Mr. Fisher. With your books, I'm reminded once again of why I love to read!

A Historical novel as it is a tale of love, betrayal and ultimate redemption. Set in Germany, this exquisite story follows the life of the Hinterberger family. The family is divided by rivalry between family members since Anna's own youth. The Black Eagle Inn is the wonderfully written anthology by Christop. This is the second book I read by Christoph Fischer an amazingly talented author who puts his whole self into his wonderful writing, an author to look out for with such talent at portraying family dynamics. Greatly recommended !!!

Christoph Fischer’s, THE BLACK EAGLE INN, the final instalment of his THREE NATIONS TRILOGY is a journey of personal and social movement. The setting is Bavaria both during and after the Great War, but the social issues presented in this epic drama easily reflect the suffering and injustice of our modern times. The skeleton of the story is a family saga headed by the matriarch, Anna, who symbolically cannot produce heirs to continue the greed and callousness that has been the foundation of their success as an important farming institution and owners of the respectable Black Eagle Inn. Human relationships and tolerance are placed on the back burner to maintain the upkeep of their estates and social standing. The author depicts the narrow-mindedness of small town attitudes of this troubled era but he also offers a strong positive message that takes the form of a widespread social guilt for Germany’s past crimes towards humanity. Yet the redemptive trend is still a work in progress – the hatred of Jews is transferred in part to the intolerance of Muslims – homosexuality is legalized but tolerated only from afar – women are at the beginning stage in their march towards acceptance as equal partners. Anna’s legacy cannot continue; her family members must either join the movement towards compassion and acceptance or fall by the wayside. A strong, clear message is unfolded in this well-crafted last instalment. Without a doubt, a very powerful read. I own this book.
