Often overlooked due to the success of Trumpets which was published a few moths before, Mars second collection of winter prose Ember Asleep is rather beautiful. The subject of winter begins with "September" where Mark writes "Dawn awaits a sleepless town, skies all coloured grey, here I roam the streets without you as summer fades away..." before we escape into a world of snow, pain, regret, memories and surprise. Some of the pieces were composed with music in mind - Mark has confirmed this on many an interview - notably so with "San Francisco" and "Remembering Your Name" where you can almost hear the soft piano chords behind the words. A worthy edition to Marks previous works. 5 stars.
